10 days, 9 nights Safari in beautiful Southern+Northern Tanzania
Wilderness-enthusiasts will thoroughly enjoy this tour that blends the wilds of Tanzania with one of her most famous destinations. By combining time in Ruaha with a visit to Ngorongoro Conservation Area, guest will experience the full spectrum of bush adventure Tanzania offers.
The tour departs from Dar es Salaam, traveling south into the sprawling golden plains of Mikumi National Park. Safaris here often place guests in close proximity to eland, giraffe and zebra as they graze freely against the backdrop of the Udzungwa Mountains. From Mikumi, you then head towards one of the world’s most significant Stone Age archaeological sites: Isimila. Take a quick break from the wilderness to examine tools that date back over 60, 000 years as you walk between ancient stone pillars. From here, it is back to the bush as you dive into the country’s largest National Park: Ruaha. Explore this untrammelled and unmaintained wilderness on walking and driving safaris, as you search for large herds of elephant. Keep your eyes open for predators as well, which are often seen lurking in tall grasses or lazing in the shade. After Ruaha, the trip becomes infinitely more lush as you climb high into the Udzungwa Mountains before descending to the base of the Ngorongoro Crater.
The journey concludes in this UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you will have a full day to explore the crater’s slopes, floodplains and plateaus. As one of the planet’s largest natural enclosures, the game viewing here reaches an explosive and awe-inspiring climax.
What to Expect
Safaris in the southern circuit are among the most remote and wild in Tanzania. Guests are drawn to the attraction of a raw wilderness experience, where humans are few and wildlife, plentiful. Sightings of major species are less predictable than they are in the north – but what visitors get in exchange is a taste of the African bush as it perhaps once was. While no wildlife can be guaranteed in the bush, many of our guests see some, or even all, of the following:
• Africa’s “Big Five”: Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros
• Cheetah, hyena
• Wild dogs
• Hippopotamus, crocodile
• Zebra, giraffe, gazelle kudu, warthog
• Ostrich, secretary bird, lilac breasted roller, fish eagles, vultures
This package also travels through a variety of landscapes, including:
• Savannah and rolling plains
• Jungles and ancient volcanoes
• Baobab trees
• Lakes, rivers and ravines
• Flood plains and plateaus
